Correction - Van Hagar is back. Van Halen has been broken up since 1984 when DLR left. I'm sorry, but I'm just not enthused by this news at all... [img]wink.gif[/img]
I don't know if he's to blame, seems things are very twisted from the interviews I've read on them, but once he joined Van Halen they turned so boring, cliche and predictable. They were no longer fun. They turned into the Phil Collins of hard rock.
And no offense but Eddie can't just contribute anything besides nostalgia and that's plenty sad considering what he's name stands for, have u seen those pics of him from NAMM at the Peavy booth? YUCK!. The thing that saddens me is that he's one of the best rock guitarists of all time. I can't think of a better example of a technically skilled guitar player besides Hendrix, Randy Rhoads(RIP) who were able to incorporate great playing with accessible songs that non-musicians could love. His stuff is not easy to play either, even the rhythm parts are full of little fills, articulations and variations in every bar. He popularized(not pionereed) a TON of techniques including tapping, all manner of harmonics, (pinch, natural, tapped, etc) use of effects like phaser, flanger, tape echo etc, whammy bar usage, fast scalar runs, pioneered the development of high gain amp sounds etc.

I saw VH years ago with Sammy, and they rocked the house. Didn't suck at all.
Dave's a great showman, but even if they did get back together now, I doubt he'd be doing those jumping splits. Did anyone see the tour he did with Sammy? I heard it wasn't happening. Dave's a character, though. I saw him in a strip joint a couple of months ago, still cavorting with strippers after all these years.

Anyway, I think it's pretty amazing how this forum has gone on for a real long time without even metioning the incredible groove and sound of Alex van Halen... I still think old Alex had some pretty undefinable groove stuff going on..
Alex is okay, but I always thought his drums sounded like a huge bag of ass.
Alex's best work IMO was on tunes such as I'm the One [Show Your Love], Outta Love [Again], Loss Kontrol, Light Up the Sky, In a Simple Rhyme, Hot for Teacher, Girl Gone Bad, Top Jimmy, Sinner's Swing, Mean Streets, House of Pain...& maybe some Poundcake, Armageddon, & a few of the "newer"/later tunes...& dare i say it...Jump [the synchopated off-beat groove in 4/4 [or, "8/4" as it were ;c) ] during the gtr solo section].... Some of the stuff they did as Sam Halen/Van Hagar was cool i guess, but we all know we'd REALLY like to see the orig - the DLR re-U [guess we'll just "keep on day-dreamin'" on that one]...
Yeah, Al's kit either sounde like a "HBoA," OR, it was pure late-70s/early 80s different-&-"unique" hard rock drum sound genius; with that ringy, clunky-chunky snare; "flappy-*brappy*" sounding toms, thud kick, S-L-O-S-H-Y hats, & W-A-S-H-Y freekin cymbal-riding...I really liked his playing on those tunes, tho...but his live arena solos WERE a "HBoA"...-wind.... Alex has the most definitive snare sound IMO. Not a small task. His ability to let his brother run free and hold the ship down w/M.A. is quite underrated. I heard a few V.H. tunes today driving home and thought of this thread. "Right Now" is a killer groove. It has it all...

His sound on Fair Warning is amazing. The snare really sounds good. Great crack.
I tried to get his sound with a 6.25 Ludwig we had at school. I saw that he put duct tape all over the head so I tried it. It sorta sounded similar.
It started downhill for his sound after 1984. The whole band went downhill, so it's not surprising his sound went as well.
